  Among Jian ware of the Song Dynasty, both surviving examples and archaeological finds confirm that the "oil-spot" glaze was the highest grade and most difficult to fire at the time.

 Today, among contemporary Jian Zhan ware artisans, a few masters have achieved aesthetic heights comparable to those of the Song Dynasty. Their oil-spot glazes exhibit a "jellyfish-like" appearance — full, dynamic, neither rigid nor overly pale. This is extremely difficult to achieve, even with electric kilns. Moreover, during use, such oil-spot pieces gradually turn blue and display iridescent colors as they absorb tea, further enhancing their value for collection.
